Fleet Air Arm Museum

From £15

Europe's largest collection of naval aircraft, including Concorde. You can walk through an aircraft carrier, watch real jets taking off next door, and easily spend a whole day here.

T

his is a brilliant day out, especially if you've got kids – or anyone who likes planes, really. The Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton is about fifteen minutes away, and it's home to over 100 naval aircraft including Concorde 002, the first British-built supersonic plane. You can actually walk through it, which is pretty special.

The best bit is probably the Aircraft Carrier Experience, where you go through what it's like to live and work on HMS Ark Royal. They've rebuilt sections of the ship, and you can stand on the flight deck surrounded by real aircraft. It's properly immersive.

Because it's right next to the actual Royal Navy air station, you might see real helicopters and jets taking off and landing while you're there. There's a viewing area where you can watch the action – my nephew could happily spend hours there.

What you need to know:

  • About 15 minutes from the pub at RNAS Yeovilton
  • Open Wed-Sun 10am-4.30pm (daily during school holidays)
  • Entry £15 online or £19 on the door – ticket valid for a year
  • Allow at least 3-4 hours, easily a full day
  • Café on site, plus outdoor picnic area and play area for kids

Perfect for a rainy day when you can't face walking up any more hills. And if you come back to us afterwards, I'll make sure you've got a proper pint waiting.
